Let me start by saying that Babylon 2022 is a thrilling and engaging film that is definitely worth watching. Directed by Damien Chazelle, the movie takes place in the late 1920s and follows the story of a young Hollywood actress named Clara Bow (played by Margot Robbie) as she navigates the complex and often cut-throat world of Tinseltown.
Right from the opening scene, Babylon 2022 immerses you in the glitz and glamour of Hollywood's golden age. The attention to detail in the film's set design, costumes, and overall aesthetic is absolutely stunning and truly transports you back in time. You can feel the energy and excitement of the era pulsing through every scene.
As the story unfolds, we see Clara Bow become embroiled in a number of different dramas and scandals, all while trying to make her way to the top of the Hollywood hierarchy. Along the way, she encounters a wide array of colorful characters, from fellow actors to producers to gossip columnists, each with their own unique motivations and agendas.
One of the things I appreciated most about Babylon 2022 was the way it tackled some of the darker aspects of Hollywood's history. The film doesn't shy away from showing the sexism, racism, and exploitation that were rampant in the industry during this time period. However, it manages to do so in a way that feels nuanced and thoughtful rather than heavy-handed or preachy.
Of course, no review of Babylon 2022 would be complete without mentioning the incredible performances from the cast. Margot Robbie absolutely shines as Clara Bow, bringing both a vulnerability and a fierce determination to the role. Brad Pitt also delivers a standout performance as a charismatic but morally ambiguous producer named Jack, while the rest of the supporting cast (which includes the likes of Olivia Wilde, Tobey Maguire, and Samara Weaving) all do a fantastic job in their respective roles.
