Creed II, the 2018 sports drama directed by Steven Caple Jr., is a worthy successor to the 2015 hit Creed. Michael B. Jordan returns as Adonis Creed, the son of legendary boxer Apollo Creed, as he faces his toughest opponent yet. Here's my review:
Creed II picks up where the first film left off, with Adonis Creed rising through the ranks as a boxer with the help of his mentor, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone). But when a new challenger emerges in the form of Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu), the son of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), the man who killed Adonis' father in the ring, things get personal.
One of the things that makes Creed II so engaging is the emotional weight of the story. Adonis is grappling with the legacy of his father and the expectations that come with it. Rocky is dealing with his own personal demons, including the loss of his mentor, Mickey. And the Dragos are facing their own challenges, including the fallout from Ivan's defeat at the hands of Rocky in Rocky IV.
Michael B. Jordan delivers another powerhouse performance as Adonis, capturing both the physicality and the vulnerability of the character. The relationship between Adonis and Rocky is also a highlight of the movie, with Stallone giving a nuanced and heartfelt performance as the aging boxer.
The boxing scenes in Creed II are as intense and thrilling as you would expect, with the climactic fight between Adonis and Viktor being a standout moment. The cinematography is excellent, with the camera following the action in a way that makes you feel like you're in the ring with the fighters.
The supporting cast is also excellent. Tessa Thompson returns as Bianca, Adonis' girlfriend and musical collaborator, and their relationship is given more depth and nuance in this film. Lundgren is surprisingly effective as Ivan Drago, bringing a sense of tragic gravitas to the character.
Overall, Creed II is a worthy successor to the first film, delivering on both the action and the emotional depth. It's a movie that's both entertaining and thought-provoking, with a strong sense of heart and character. If you're a fan of the Rocky franchise or just great sports movies in general, you won't want to miss this one.
